What is Code 128?
Code 128 uses 107 data characters plus start/stop symbols in three subsets (A, B, C) that switch automatically. It is the ISO/IEC 15417 standard and the de-facto standard for shipping labels, receiving tags and asset tags worldwide.
Encoding rules and capacity
- Full ASCII 128 (upper/lower case, digits, punctuation);
- Pure-numeric input auto-uses subset C — two digits per character, near-EAN density;
- Practical capacity around 25 digits or 43 alphanumeric characters;
- Check digit (mod 103) is optional and computed for you.
