Are check digits calculated automatically?
Yes. For EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A you enter the digits without the check digit (12, 7 and 11 respectively) and the tool appends the GS1-standard check digit. Other formats validate the data and flag it immediately instead of rendering a wrong code.
1D vs 2D codes
1D barcodes encode data horizontally only: small capacity, read by dedicated scanners, but cheapest to print and fastest to read — the retail and logistics standard. 2D codes (like QR) encode in both directions, hold thousands of characters, and are read by phone cameras. They don’t replace each other: a checkout scanner reads EAN/UPC, a phone camera reads QR.
Which format should I pick?
- Retail product at a checkout → EAN-13 (international) or UPC-A (North America);
- Internal inventory, order numbers, any text → Code 128 (most common, highest density);
- Logistics outer case → ITF-14;
- Phone scanning → QR Code.
Printing advice
1D scannability depends on module width: use ≥0.33mm for thermal labels (≈2.6 dots at 203dpi) and a bar height of at least 12mm. Need to rescale or recolor later? Download the SVG.
FAQ
Is it free?
Yes, unlimited and free, no account required.
How many digits for EAN-13?
Enter 12 digits (no check digit) — the 13th is added automatically.
Is GS1 DataBar supported?
Not yet — DataBar is on the roadmap.
Can these codes be used on real products?
The files are yours. Note that retail barcodes require a GS1-registered manufacturer prefix — no tool can do that for you.
Can I scale barcodes up?
Download SVG for lossless scaling; for PNG use the 4× export. Keep module width ≥0.2mm for scannability.
